General NewsResultsWomen’s Central Regional Road Race Championships Review By Emma Wood

Firstly, well done to Rose Osborne for a fantastic win at the Central Regional Champs! Thanks to her for giving me confidence and a friendly wheel to follow and to everyone at Drops Cycling for lighting up the racing scene. Also thanks to the club supporters who rode out to Chearsley and carried me up the hills with their motivation – it really helps and made for a great atmosphere.

The field was very small for the women’s 1/2/3 race with only 12 riders on the start line. Despite this, it was the toughest 80km I’ve ever ridden! The riders were experienced and very strong, making it a serious effort to push on up all three major hills that appeared on each of the five laps. The hot weather added to the challenge and it took a lot of willpower to stay in the group of 10 that formed and continued to defend attacks from two powerful riders who repeatedly sprinted off the front. Coming up the final hill to the finish line was tough – we were still all together. I’d known since the second lap that I would not have anything left to use in the sprint but I managed to hold my pace up to the line and came home 8th. It was a great experience for me to endure a bit of suffering and watch some great athletes do their jobs. Hopefully next year I will come back with a bit more left in my legs!
