General NewsHWCC Hilly 50 6th Feb 2022

Better than expected turn out for the Hilly 50, considering the weather. The rain stayed away with the sun making an appearance on several occasions. its was a little blustery in places, but didn't dampen the spirits of conquering those hills. Great effort everyone.

An alternative ride by Nick Calkin:-

"Well I rode the Hilly 50 route on the MTB. Headed out at 0805 for a fun packed rainy, headwindy ride out to Risborough. Started the course at 0835 to give the roadies a chance. By the bottom of Kingston hill the rain had stopped and I was slowly boiling in a bag, so had to stop and strip off my windproof and full finger gloves. By the time I got going again I was freezing and took ages to warm up again. Headwind most of the way to Ewelme. Maidensgrove climb was sheltered, but as I came out of the trees onto the exposed road I almost got blown to a complete stop. Chinnor to Risborough was fun and fast. Glanced behind me at the bottom of Kop to see a solo roadie catching me quickly, so put a spurt on to keep ahead of him back to the car park. It was a nice chap called Mark, who came in about 30 secs behind me. Glad I did it now it’s over 😂"
