My first road race this morning. A rolling circuit above Dartmoor with a good variety of terrain. Got off well until about 10km in. A stall in the bunch and a clip of wheels. Next thing I know I’m upside down in a hedge. After re shipping the chain and getting on the bike I noticed the bars had shifted about 10 degrees to the left. Anyways, back to it. Had about 30seconds to make up and was now behind the convoy and 3 public cars. Progress was slow to start but then as we started going over the rollers it started to come back bit by bit. Managed to get into the convoy and then the bunch after 10mins flat out. Spent about 15mins recovering at the back before moving back through the bunch and about 5km into lap 2 had momentum on the outside. Sent it off the front and after a minute or so had the company of Joe and 2 Nopinz Development riders. We had the gap and committed to it - stretching it out to about 45s. 2 laps flew by with a steady tempo and not much to report. Gradually, it was being closed and as the last lap came to an end we just had the 10km blast into town left to go. The bunch was tentatively close now and the Nopinz guys started to play a few games. Me and Joe committed and kept the chain tight until with 800m to go I led into the final roundabout with just a 10s lead on the main bunch. A tough finish with the road straightening at 400m to go and steady at about 4%. I pulled off and feathered the brakes to slot in third wheel. Joe first, and then me within a nopinz sandwhich. Joe went long, fearing a closing break and then with about 250 to go nopinz launched it. I sat on as late as possible with the tough finish favouring a shorter sprint. With 120 to go I launched and managed to seal it. A crazy race but loved the experience and back for more next weekend!
A huge thanks to Jeremy Crook at Thame Cycles for getting the bike together for today!
